CNY 2018 Wooden Dog Door Wedge

Happy Lunar New Year 2018! It is crazy how January just flew by like that. Was just wondering what we should make for this festive season, and a dog shaped wooden door wedge came to mind.

We thought it would be a great addition to homes since according to the chinese zodiac, 2018 is the year of the dog. What better way to keep the doors opened for visitors than a little guard dog?

For this, we used the laser cutter. As our machine can only work with wood of a maximum thickness of 9mm, we first cut out 4 identical side profile from a 8mm plywood and then glue them together.

Plywood was used because we had scraps lying around. It is the best for a quick prototype.

The glued product looked really flat (like the 1st sketch), so we chamfered the edges with a router before sanding it.

It was then finished with Ronseal walnut coloured satin varnish. This coating really made a lot of difference as compared to the raw finish. Pretty glad how it turned out. Not too far off from the 3d sketch eh.

This time we glued together two pieces of 18mm thick Nyatoh solidwood instead of plywood.

As the laser cutter was not able to cut through its thickness, we bandsaw-ed the profile edges after the laser did it’s engraving on the wood. As you can tell, the laser left its very distinct mark, hence the difference between the sketch and final product. We will probably try CNC routing next round to see how it’ll turn out.

After sanding down the edges, we used HG beeswax to finish the product. No PU coating this time as the raw colour looked pretty good on its own.

For this, we stuck on suede to the wedge portion because we realised hardwood can be pretty harsh to our door finishes and flooring. It gave the product a really good texture, but at the same time it took away quite a fair bit of friction (not good for a door wedge). More material experimenting to do! But it shall suffice for now.

Other Wooden Door Wedge

Let us know if you would like one for yourself or as a gift. We could craft other animals or shapes as well if you do happen to have other favourites. Since it is made-to-order, you can also specify the type of wood and finishing that you would like. But if that is too specific for you, just let us know if you prefer dark or light wood, glossy or matte finishing.
